Animation

There are various types of animation which can be used to develop the creative element of the ICT curriculum. Included amongst them are stop motion and claymation using a webcam or digital video camera. The easiest way to get started is to use a piece of dedicated software.

To explore this kind of animation for free you could try Fluxtime. The free materials are limited but give an idea of what can be achieved, the site is built for education and includes a section on the use of animation in education.

The software used in the Trafford animation project was Complete Animator by Iota Software, which gives the children greater flexibility, allowing them to develop their own characters and storylines.

"The Butterfly" was created after two lessons by Bobbi, Y4 St Alphonus RC School

Once the basic skills have been aquired animation can inorporated in a variety of areas of the curiculum such as developing communication and teamwork, retelling known facts for a different audience, developing storytelling and character. For examples of how Complete Animator has been used in trafford schools go to www.traffordlearning.org/trafford/Sections/public_html/Teaching/curriculum/ict/animation_project.htm

There are several useful websites about developing animation in the primary curriculum:

Graphical Modelling

Graphical modelling software differs from art packages, such as Dazzle 03 or MS Paint in the way the software saves the images that are created on screen. The professions most likely to use graphical modelling software are planners, engineers and architects - where the images are built up using different elements which can be moved, replicated or re-sized without affecting other on-screen elements.

In an art package the computer saves the image as a whole. Selecting a portion of that image can be difficult, and making changes to that selection e.g. re-positioning it, impacts on the whole image:

Using an art program

Selecting the sun using an art progam usually selects some background colour too. When the selected area is moved a blank area is left.

This is because art programs work with complete images and do not distinguish between the different elements of a picture

Using graphical modelling

The sun can be selected as a separate object and moved anywhere on screen. In addition different objects can be layered i.e. put in front of one another. Putting the grass in front of the sun gives the appearancec of the sun setting.

This is because graphical modelling programs save each drawn element separately so that they can be moved, repeated or re-sized without affecting other objects in the same image

Using the drawing tools but working in a larger size allows extra detail to be added before re-sizing to an appropriate scale. The image can then be replicated, resized and flipped to create the final image:

It is possible, but not necessary, to buy dedicated graphical modelling software. The above images were all created using the drawing tools in Textease.

The Northumberland ngfl website provides some basic activities for use with this unit:

Pupils who enjoy this work may be interested in the free download Google Sketchup. This software requires a different skill set but produces very satisfying results:
